The Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing is dedicated to serving the public through exceptional literary programs and educational resources, and to providing individuals of all skill levels with the ongoing educational opportunities they need to develop and succeed as creative writers.
Piper Center programming is dynamic, entrepreneurial, and transformative, spanning multiple disciplines and fields of interest, and enriching the cultural environment of Arizona State University, Arizona, and the entire Southwest. With an emphasis on presenting international authors and opportunities for cultural exchange, the Piper Center aims to make creative writing and literature accessible throughout our local and global communities.
Our programs include:
- Classes and workshops through the Piper Writers Studio
- The annual Desert Nights, Rising Stars Writers Conference
- Your Novel Year, an online certificate program offering classes, mentorship, and guided support for authors working on a novel
- The Distinguished Visiting Writers Series, which brings authors of particular distinction and merit to the Phoenix metropolitan area for community engagements and celebrated readings
In addition, the Piper Center is a strong partner of ASU’s MFA in Creative Writing Program, helping to support faculty and students through a number of competitive grants, fellowships, graduate assistantships, writing residencies, and educational opportunities around the globe.
The Piper Center is also a member of the Imagination and Climate Futures Initiative, which seeks to explore how imagination, storytelling, and the arts can merge with scientific inquiry to shape humanity’s responses to climate change and create global solutions for the future.
