The School of Social Transformation at Arizona State University is a collaborating partner of the Race, Sex, Power 2018 conference — an event structured as an interdisciplinary forum geared toward activists, artists and academics. Additionally, school faculty members Marlon M. Bailey and Karen Leong are active participants in the conference.

“As an interdisciplinary black gender and sexuality scholar, I believe it is critically important to be engaged with activists and artists to discuss the many challenges confronting our communities around race, gender and sexual equity,” said Bailey, an associate professor of women and gender studies and one of the event’s organizers. “Race, Sex, Power 2018 offers the occasion and space for this necessary convening.”

Bailey will also moderate a plenary session titled, “Trans Lives Matter.”

Leong, an associate professor of women and gender studies, and Asian Pacific American studies is appearing at the conference as a keynote speaker.

Elsie Moore, director of the School of Social Transformation, is proud of the school’s faculty for their involvement in this year’s conference.

“The sexuality and sexual wellbeing of people of color have always been issues, and to have a conference that examines the issues historically and in the present is critical to the advancement of civil rights and human rights in the U.S. and transnationally,” Moore said.

Now in its 10th year, the Race, Sex, Power conference aims to develop a diverse intellectual community where healthy debate about the intersections of race and sexuality are encouraged, and where opportunities for networking and professional development are provided.

The School of Social Transformation at Arizona State University joins more than a dozen universities across the country in supporting this conference.

Race, Sex, Power 2018 is a free event taking place April 6-7 at Roosevelt University in Chicago.
